Rollers in agricultural soil cultivation: Which roller is suitable for which soil?

Choosing the right roller is a crucial factor in soil cultivation, as it significantly influences soil structure, reconsolidation, and seedbed quality. There is no one-size-fits-all solution; the key is finding the right combination of roller type, soil type, and operating conditions. This article provides an overview of the most important agricultural rollers and their typical applications.

The Cambridge roller It consists of wedge-shaped casting rings and cleaning stars and ensures strong reconsolidation and very good crumb formation; it promotes capillarity and moisture retention.,

Recommended Soils:

  • Loamy/clayey (in dry to moderately humid conditions)
  • Light to medium-heavy soils
  • Heavy soils after drying

Not recommended:

  • very wet, highly sticky floors
  • very sandy soils (excessive compaction)
  • very stony soils (higher wear)

The Crosskill roller It consists of cast rings with staggered, narrow teeth and is primarily designed for seedbed preparation. It provides excellent crumbling and self-cleaning properties. While it achieves less reconsolidation than the Cambridge roller, this also makes it more versatile. Furthermore, it is relatively resistant to stones.

Recommended soils:

  • Loamy and mixed soils (very good seedbed preparation without excessive recompaction)
  • Stony plots (quite robust and therefore less damage from stones)

Not recommended:

  • Sandy, very loose soils (it works here, but provides less deep reconsolidation)

The Nockenring crumbler It consists of cast rings with profiled cams offering a larger contact area (than the Crosskill roller) and achieves excellent crumbling action and self-cleaning. It is very frequently used in mulch seeding, but depending on the seedbed, it can compact the soil too much.

Recommended soils:

  • Clayey/heavy soils after drying
  • Mulch/straw areas

Not recommended:

  • Very sandy, loose soils (profiles seem rather unnecessary there)
  • Stony soils (tread wear)

The v ring roller It consists of wedge-shaped rings that are individually mounted on the shaft and are therefore easy to replace should individual rings become dented. The roof ring roller serves as a lightweight version of the Crosskill roller and offers higher load-bearing capacity at a lower weight, but slightly less reconsolidation than the heavier Crosskill variant. The roof ring roller is considered to be very resistant to clogging.

Recommended soils:

  • Sticky/clayey soils (low clogging even at moderate moisture levels)
  • Mixed soils and light clay soils (provides good crumb structure without compacting too much)

Not recommended:

  • Very sandy soils (not the most efficient type)

The Flex ring roller It consists of individual spring elements and ensures strip-wise reconsolidation, as well as a soft, crumbly surface appearance with good self-cleaning.

Recommended Soils:

  • Sandy & loamy – loose (creates desired crumb structure without excessive compaction)

Not recommended:

  • Wet clay soils (due to clumping)
  • Stony soils (wear and tear)

The Flat bar roller It consists of flat steel bars that can be attached to the roller in a straight or staggered pattern. It ensures uniform reconsolidation and good crumbling (higher crumbling than with the pipe roller).

Recommended Soils:

  • Loamy-sandy mixed soils & medium-strength soils

Not recommended:

  • Sticky floors (poorer self-cleaning)
  • Very stony soils

The Tube bar roller It consists of several round tubes that can be attached to the roller in a straight, staggered, or V-shaped configuration. It ensures uniform reconsolidation and good soil structure. It has a simple design, yet is very robust and widely used.

Recommended soils:

  • Sandy to loamy soil suitable for dry to moderately humid conditions.

Not recommended:

  • areas with larger stones

The Steel ring roller This is a classic ring roller where the individual "rings" are permanently welded to the roller and cannot be removed individually. The roller is very robust, durable, and ensures good crumb formation/rolling. It also offers a long service life even in wet conditions.

Recommended soils:

  • Medium to heavy soils after drying

Not recommended:

  • Very wet, very sticky floors (not ideal)

The T-ring roller It consists of ring discs with a T-shaped cross-section. Ideal for a good balance of crumbling, moderate reconsolidation, and load-bearing capacity. It is also one of the most cost-effective rollers. However, it is not always the best crust breaker, as it is not as effective as, for example, cam rings.

Recommended soils:

  • Mixed soils/ loamy-sandy soils
  • Mulched areas

Not recommended:

  • Very stony soils (due to the increased wear on the tread)

The U-ring roller It consists of individual U-profile rings. During use, the U-profiles fill with soil, ensuring gentle, strip-wise compaction. The U-ring roller thus scores points with low wear, good load-bearing capacity, and reduced silting effects. It offers good self-cleaning, especially in the tandem version.

Recommended soils:

Heavy, moist loamy soils (low tendency to clog and gentle compaction)Mulch and straw areas

Not recommended:

Less „aggressive“ in clod breaking up than the Cambridge roller – therefore it may be too gentle on very light soils.

The Double roller It consists of two rollers running in tandem, which can be selected depending on the soil type and the project, and serves to combine leveling and compaction. This ensures a very even seedbed and also offers a high level of self-cleaning.

Recommended soils:

Wide range of applications -> sandy to loamy (due to the individual choice of roller combination)

Not recommended:Very wet soils without drying due to the risk of deep compaction
